Backyard Putting Green Installation in Mooresville, NC

There’s nothing quite like being able to step into your own backyard and work on your short game.

Ultimate Turf recently completed a custom backyard putting green in Mooresville, North Carolina, and this project is a great example of how you don't need a huge backyard to create an awesome home golf setup.

At approximately 30' x 15', this putting green was designed to fit perfectly into the corner of our client's backyard while still providing plenty of space to practice different putts.

A Custom Putting Green Designed for the Space

Every backyard is different, which is why we design our residential putting greens around the available space and how the homeowner plans to use it.

For this Mooresville project, the corner of the backyard provided an ideal location. Rather than making the putting green feel like something that was simply dropped into the yard, we wanted it to blend naturally with the surrounding landscaping.

The finished green measures approximately 450 square feet and makes excellent use of an area that might otherwise have gone unused.

Creating a More Realistic Putting Surface

A good backyard putting green should offer more than a flat piece of artificial turf.

During the installation, we created a gradual slope throughout the green to give the homeowner a more realistic putting experience. The subtle elevation changes allow putts to break and provide more variety when practicing from different locations.

This makes the green more interesting to play and better mimics the conditions you'd experience on a real golf course.

Four Putting Cups for More Variety

We installed four putting cups throughout the green.

Having multiple cup locations gives the homeowner the ability to practice putts from different angles, distances, and breaks instead of hitting toward the same target every time.

We also added lights to the putting cups, which became an especially cool feature once the homeowner added string lights around the backyard.

Now the putting green isn't limited to daytime use. They can head outside in the evening, turn on the lights, and keep playing after the sun goes down.

Fringe and River Rock Complete the Look

Performance was important, but we also wanted this putting green to look like it belonged in the backyard.

We installed artificial turf fringe around the putting surface to create a more finished and natural transition between the green and the surrounding yard.

River rock was also incorporated along portions of the edge. This added another landscaping element and helped give the entire installation a clean, natural appearance.

The combination of the putting surface, fringe, river rock, and surrounding landscaping turned the corner of the yard into a feature rather than just a practice area.

A Backyard Putting Green You Can Enjoy Day or Night

One of our favorite parts of this project is how the homeowner finished the space after our installation.

The addition of outdoor string lights, combined with the illuminated putting cups, completely changes the atmosphere at night. It's now a backyard feature that can be used for practicing golf, entertaining friends, or just enjoying an evening outside.

At roughly 30' x 15', this project also shows that a residential putting green doesn't need to take over your entire backyard.

With the right design, even a smaller section or unused corner of a property can become a functional and attractive putting area.
